Tikka joined Vet2Cat as a kitten in 2020, he has always been a bit of a stress head around strangers and with any changes around him. Unfortunately, this has caused him to suffer from cystitis since September 2023. He was put on a special food to help dissolve crystals and support the bladder. Unfortunately, despite the food Tikka has had a blocked bladder four times. He was seen by our out-of-hours provider on three occasions for this issue. On each occasion he has had to be sedated or given a general anaesthetic to unblock the obstruction in his lower urinary tract (his manhood), this is done by the vet inserting a small urinary catheter into his bladder via the penis to flush out the blockage.
We have also had to visit Tikka at home in September to help him pass urine under sedation, luckily for Tikka no catheter was needed that time, and Claire discussed the option of surgery to prevent this from reoccurring due to the number of times poor Tikka was experiencing bladder issues. His owners decided that this would be the best course of action, and he was booked in for the surgery over at Whiteley Village Vets for early November.
However, before he was due his operation he blocked again, so off we went to see him at home. This time we had to sedate him and insert a urinary catheter to relieve the blockage. Luckly his surgery was booked for the next day.
The surgery went really well but meant that poor Tikka had to have his manhood removed and new urinary outlet made so he could pee properly and would not continue to block.
He has been an absolute trooper before and after his operation, and we really hope this will be the solution for his urinary problems.
